Pregnancy Essentials I Actually Loved
Pregnancy is such a strange mix of exciting, beautiful, uncomfortable, exhausting, and amazing.
There are a million pregnancy products out there, and you definitely do not need all of them. After going through pregnancy myself, though, there are a few things that genuinely made me more comfortable or that I would buy again.
Here are some of my favourite pregnancy essentials.
1. Pregnancy Pillow
A pregnancy pillow is one of the best things you can buy, in my opinion.
During my first pregnancy, I decided I did not need one and completely regretted it.
During my second pregnancy, I got one of those massive pregnancy pillows and loved it. If I were buying one again, I would probably choose a smaller wedge pillow with an extra pillow between my knees. It takes up less room in the bed while still giving your belly and hips some support.
Sleep gets hard enough during pregnancy. Anything that makes it a little more comfortable is worth it.

2. Comfortable Maternity Clothes
You do not need an entirely new wardrobe just because you are pregnant, but having a few clothes that actually fit comfortably can make such a difference.
I liked having a few basics that I could mix and match.
Maternity leggings were probably the easiest thing to wear on days when everything felt uncomfortable.

Maternity tank tops are another great basic because you can wear them alone or add a cardigan, jean jacket, or linen shirt.

I also loved having a good pair of maternity jeans.
I had a pair of wide leg jeans from Old Navy that I got compliments on all the time. People were always surprised when I showed them the maternity panel.
And if you can find clothing that works for both pregnancy and nursing, even better.
I had a lounge dress that I wore throughout pregnancy and continued wearing while breastfeeding.
3. Pregnancy and Birth Books
I love learning about birth while I am pregnant.
One of my absolute favourite books is Hypnobirthing: Practical Ways to Make Your Birth Better by Siobhan Miller.
This book completely changed how I thought about labor and helped me understand breathing, relaxation, mindset, and how fear can affect the way we experience birth.
It played a huge role in helping me prepare for a peaceful home birth.

I also used pregnancy apps throughout pregnancy because I loved seeing what was happening each week and how baby was growing.
4. Prenatal Vitamins
Prenatal vitamins are one of those pregnancy basics that are worth discussing with your midwife or doctor.
Different people tolerate different vitamins differently, especially when nausea is involved.
I found one that worked well for me and did not make me feel nauseous, which was a huge win.

Talk with your healthcare provider about what prenatal vitamin and nutrients are appropriate for you.
5. Bath and Body Products
Pregnancy is a very good excuse to make your bath a little more luxurious.
You are growing an entire human. You deserve the bath. 😂
I loved having gentle bath products, body scrubs, lotions, and anything that made me feel a little more comfortable in my changing body.
So Luxury Coco Oat Bath
This was one of my favourites for making bath water feel soft and moisturizing.
So Luxury Body Scrub
I loved how this made my skin feel and it smelled amazing.
Aura Tae Bubble Bath
A good bubble bath can make your bathroom feel like a tiny spa, which is exactly what I wanted when I was pregnant and tired.
Aura Tae Body Lotion
I especially liked easy to apply lotions later in pregnancy when reaching your legs became an Olympic event.
If you are pregnant and have sensitive skin, it is always worth checking ingredients and choosing products that work well for you.
6. Comfortable Shoes
Your feet and body can get pretty sore during pregnancy, especially toward the end.
I loved having shoes I could easily slip on without bending over and fighting with laces.
Birkenstocks were great for me because they were comfortable, supportive, and easy to get on.

Birkenstock Clogs
Honestly, by the third trimester, being able to put your shoes on without assistance is enough of a selling point. 😂
7. Pregnancy Support Belt
I loved having a belly support band.
It gave my belly a bit of extra support when I was walking, doing things around the house, or on my feet for longer periods.
If you are dealing with significant pelvic, back, or abdominal pain during pregnancy, talk to your healthcare provider or a pelvic floor physiotherapist as well.

8. Water Bottle With a Straw
You are going to drink a lot of water during pregnancy.
Having a big insulated cup with a straw made it much easier for me to actually keep drinking throughout the day.
It also becomes incredibly useful during labor because someone else can hold it while you drink.

9. Pregnancy Milestone Cards
This one is more fun than practical, but pregnancy goes by so much faster than you think.
Taking a quick photo every few weeks is such a sweet way to look back and see how much your belly changed and how baby grew throughout pregnancy.
I created my own printable pregnancy milestone cards from 4 to 42 weeks, plus a “Baby Is Here” card. You can print them yourself and use them for bump photos throughout your pregnancy.

Those are some of the pregnancy products I personally found useful or would happily buy again.
You definitely do not need every pregnancy product you see online.
Pick the things that make you more comfortable, help you rest, or make this season feel a little more special.
And take the bump pictures.
You will be really glad you have them someday. 🤍
Your Doula,
Tay
